The other night me and a friend were having a conversation and the topic turned to crimewatch. for those of you who are not from here, crimewatch is one of those crime reconstruction type programmes where they take cases and ask for the public's help in solving them. And she said to me, "I always watch it, cause I reckon one day maybe I'll see someone on there I know.". so, question is, if you were watching such a programme and one of the suspects was someone you knew, or if you knew someone who had committed a crime, would you shop them to the police? or would it depend on the severity of the crime and who had committed it.

Hmm it would depend on whether the crime was sexual and/or overtly violent, though I cant imagine the anguish of knowing a good friend was capable of that...if they had been caught dodging car tax or some other minor offence I'd leave it and turn over ....

wel yeh minor offences are just that aren't they really, but ok, would it matter who the person was as to whether you would tell? i.e. if that person was someone very close to you, say a child, a parent, sibling ... could you still turn them in regardless?

I would need to consider the suffering of their victim and the fact that as they have committed say a sexual assault, they have the propensity to do it again...also a lot would depend on their attitude to the news reports of the crime, if they were completely unmoved and blase, I'd be on the phone in a minute.

and would you tell them that it was you who had shopped them?

well I guess if it was someone from the zone you wouldn't know anyway cause, a, they all have nicknames on here, and b, you haven't met any of them so don't know what they look like, smiles. from a personal perspective though, if it was a family member, I guess that there is no choice really, of course it does depend on the nature of the crime - something that has caused harm to someone else I think any decent human being should have no option but to tell, and I actually think I might even tell the person concerned that it was me who had shopped them.
